Following the Gardeners
On the good revolution of Substack, there are hundreds of brilliant writers on politics and government, book clubs, theology, and there are storytellers too. But what we need more of on Substack is gardeners!
One of the main things that originally drew me to Instagram was the huge number of gardeners who post there nearly everyday. Professionals and keen amateurs. Rare plants, beautiful gardens, and sustainable techniques have kept me coming back to IG over the past decade. Sadly, we now understand better just how much Meta users are at the mercy of Instagram’s unstable management, and it seems time to look out for greener pastures.
Where will the Gardeners go?
As Meta continues to spiral into instability, some of us want to spend less time being played by their newest algorithm. We are looking to spend more time learning from generous gardeners, and less time consuming fluffy, random content, or scrolling past ads. Substack has emerged as a sustainable way to share (and own!) our own garden writing over the long haul, while also letting the giddy part of us gardeners share photos of random blooms, nature-inspired observation, or ice-encrusted hedge, in Notes.
Even in the midst of global turmoil, the natural world continues to offer its many gifts to gardeners without reservation, and it seems that Substack is a great place for us to refocus and re-circle our horticultural wagons.
Find the Gardeners
Today, I propose an organized way to find some wonderful garden writers:
In my navigation bar, you can find the Substack Garden Writers’ Directory under the word “Directory.” I will update this list and also send it out to my subscribers, so that we can all benefit from adding new, trusted voices to our gardening journey!
If you or someone you know writes a horticulture-related newsletter on Substack, get in touch so I can add it to the list.

Thanks everyone! I will keep adding new Substacks to our list this coming week. Have a great weekend! 🌿
Thank you very much, Julie, for including The Gardening Mind in your list. I’ve been on Substack for over three years now and can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Having grown tired of other social media which just wanted silly videos, I was looking for somewhere which could host all my writing, and this platform has been absolutely brilliant.
