“Best and dearest flower that grows,
Perfect both to see and smell;
Words can never, never tell
Half the beauty of a Rose…”
🌿 Cicely Mary Barker, The Rose Fairy
Welcome to June at Havenwood!
Come take a little walk around our one-acre garden in northwestern PA, zone 5/6. Half of our property is in the shade and half in the sun, some wet and some dry, so we have a wide variety of plants growing in each season.
If you would like to have an overall framework of our gardens, here is a map of Havenwood and about our open events coming up this year:
Come take a walk around the garden with me for June…
#2 The Entry Garden
After the Spanish Bluebells in the Entry garden in May comes the giant Allium christophii for June.
#5 The Cottage Garden
Summer perennials are in full swing in the Cottage Garden for June. Our rambling Rose on the house, Rosa ‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk,’ is more glorious than ever! (photo at top) The rest of the garden compliments it in shades of pink and blue, with Knautia, Peonies, Baptisia, and Gladiolus byzantinus in the borders.
#6 Pergola Walk
After two years of training, we have a wisteria display that it fit for a storybook. I am just so pleased with our North American native Wisteria ‘Blue Moon’ as its droops so gracefully. Our rose died back to the ground this year, but thankfully the wisteria has made me forget all about that for now.
#Hot Border
The white Star of Bethlehem are the stars in the Hot Border this month, as it has its moony break from warm colors.
#15 The Lawn
One scene of texture caught my eye near the lawn today…
#17 The Pond & Bogs
This is my little sweet shop this month, and probably the area I am most excited about! It has taken me several years to collect all of the plants below, so I hope you enjoy their colorful show…

#37 Woodland Chip Path

#28 St Francis Garden
This garden is in another of its white periods, with a froth of Goat’s Beard (Aruncus) and Mountain Laurel (Kalmia). It is even more glorious at the golden hour!

#7 The Yew Arch
Finally, I am jumping back to the Birch Walk to show you the little visitor I had at sunset while taking photos.
Thanks for joining me!
So nice to have other garden writers joining me today for a virtual walk around the garden, as everyone shares their own blooms over at Carol’s for GBBD.
We will be opening our garden this weekend, June 14th, to benefit our local library! Come see the roses and Baptisia yourself and have a sit under the Wisteria in the Pergola Walk.
I particularly love your primulas and the plants around your pond! Those pitcher plants with the Primulas and native Iris are gorgeous! The Wisteria and the mountain laurels are lovely, so many unusual plants to admire!
I love all those pastel colors in the first half of your posts, Julie. I wish I could mirror your success with the Alliums too. The mountain laurel is scrumptious but I don't suppose it'd grow in my climate.
