I enjoyed the additional video links and the images of the gardens and woodland behind the Kilns. Finding you on Substack has certainly made my winter a haven and given me hours of good reading and contemplation. Thank you so much, Julie.

Catherine and Julie, The garden is a place I also take my grief and meet with the Lord. Our children have had 3 miscarriages, and the garden has been a refuge for me as I long for the grandchildren I won’t hold this side of Heaven. One early fall afternoon in 2023, I walked our gardens, wept, and prayed. It was healing to gather cuttings and make a bouquet with the remnants of summer: a few late blooming pink fairy rose stems, bright red holly berries, hellebore foliage, ash leaves, 3 white gladiolus, dried hydrangeas, and 3 white spring anemone blooming. I sent a picture of it to my son and daughter who live out of town, and they used the picture on a playlist album for their baby. Then I gave the bouquet to my daughter and son-in-law, and it has turned into a beautiful dried bouquet.

Thank you for these photos. The last 12 hours have been very hard, with a death in the family. The bubbling beauty of the garden has given me fresh joy and hope. I am already planning a small garden for the lost baby and it really helps to know that this wonderful, generous man could hold his weariness and grief alongside his garden and daily life. Quotidian things are what get us through as well as small bits of beauty. I never knew about his wife Joy until I read Becoming Mrs Lewis. It was a fantastic read. I’ll go and find it and re read it again. Bless you Julie for your heart for Gardens. 💗🌸

Catherine, so very sorry to hear that. I made my first garden after we miscarried our first child, so I know the garden is a good place to bring grief. Lewis certainly knew about grief as well as you say. Praying you and your family find some comfort in the days ahead. 🌿

Thank you. It was my daughter and it was sudden and unexpected as it always is. Just left us all reeling. I too have gardened through this loss so that’s why I’m already thinking of a wee place of remembrance.

Thank you Stephanie. I didn’t want to make a big deal out if it but felt I was in a safe and gentle group to say how I felt and that this garden post had helped.
