Dreaming of a new growing season
January is a surprisingly busy season for me as I have a steady stream of garden design client work already pouring in, and a Goudge book club in full swing. But in the cracks and edges, there is something that keeps me coming back to make lists, fill sticky notes, and look at new websites.
Plant and seed buying season is in high gear in January, with the best and rarest plants going within weeks in some cases. This is not the time for seed sowing, tempting as that can be. But it is the time for planning and making some choices about the next pieces to go into our garden puzzles for this year.
I thought it might be helpful to share the reliable mail sources that I have used over the past decade to supplement my local nursery and seed buying. And if you are in the country, like me, then you may also need somewhere to buy supplies too. (For instance, I must replace my row cover fabric this winter before the spring frosts.)
Sources for trees, rare shrubs, North American natives, fruit trees, veg seeds, heirloom flowers, rare perennials, iris, clematis…
Please note: None of these are paid adverts, and I have personally purchased (usually multiple times) from each company listed so these nurseries have been tried and put to the test! I hope that you will have good experiences with them as well!
Favorite for perennials:
Digging Dog Nursery - one of the best mail order nurseries in the country, even though it is way at the other end. It is always worth looking at Digging Dog because they have great plants that no one else does.
