“June is bustin’ out all over!
All over the meadow and the hill,
Buds are bustin’ outa bushes,
And the rompin’ river pushes
Every little wheel that wheels beside a mill…”
🌿 Rogers & Hammerstein, "June Is Bustin' Out All Over"
Welcome to Notes on Havenwood…
where I share more of the inner workings of my one-acre town garden in western Pennsylvania. We are located in horticultural zone 5/6 between the Great Lakes and the Appalachian mountains.
This musical theater favorite sums up the exuberance of June for me:
“…June is bustin’ out all over!
The feeling is gettin’ so intense
That the young Virginia creepers
Have been huggin’ the bejeepers
Outa all the mornin’-glories on the fence.
Just because it’s June—June—June!”
As I think back on our gardening activities in the month of June, it was the rambunctious growth of June that took the main stage. We opened our garden again mid-month, and on both sides of our open day we removed over a dozen large bags of weeds, trimmed some of the craziest shrubbery, and scrambled to keep up with the Clematis. But this is what you expect from June, the first month of summer that combines warm temps and many inches of rain.
Here are a few things that we were up to at Havenwood in June, including our finished columns, taking views from above, and getting ready for our June garden open day…
