Red Clematis 'Earnest Markham' and blue Clematis 'William Kennett' hover over the pink flowers of Geranium 'Bevan's Variety', and pink columbine (Aquilegia) bloom in the distance in the Shade Path at Gilmore Gardens in 2013.

Enjoy a little walk around our first garden and its Clematis!

After taking a look at the Clematis at Havenwood this summer, I was reminiscing about all of the wonderful Clematis plantings we had a decade ago at our first garden, Gilmore Gardens. I decided to delve into the vault and take a look at all of the varieties and combinations that we had growing at Gilmore in 2013. It is interested to read that I had felt they were all a bit slow getting going, but looking back it is easy to see how worth while it was to wait!

Clematis 'Madam Julia Correvon' + a pink climbing rose

Besides mulching, I used to check on the clematis stems early in the season to be sure they were climbing the right direction. This is a very low maintenance plant combination! Very worth trying if you have a rose bush or climber.
